Los LeBarón eran reconocidos por ser defensores de los derechos humanos y declararle la guerra al crimen y narcotráfico en el norte de México. Según lo detallado por autoridades, tres mujeres, Rhonita Maria Miller, Dawna Langford y Christina Marie Langford Johnson iban en camionetas, la primera con siete niños, la segunda con cuatro y la última con un bebé, cuando uno de los vehículos sufrió un pinchazo y esperó en el camino por un repuesto.

Presuntamente durante la espera fue cuando se inició el ataque. Una célula criminal, —identificada por la Fiscalía de Chihuahua como Los Jaguares—, emboscó a la unidad averiada y abrió fuego contra los pasajeros. Debido a que uno de las municiones perforó la entrada de combustible, la camioneta se incendió y Rhonita y sus hijos, dos de ellos con unos meses de edad, murieron en el incendio.

Los niños que sobrevivieron le contaron a su familia que Christina Marie, una de las víctimas, bajó del auto con las manos en alto. Quiso decir a los agresores que sólo viajaban mujeres y niños. No la escucharon.

Seis niños resultaron heridos y una niña permaneció desaparecida unas horas. Vecinos de la zona la encontraron caminando a unos 10 kilómetros del lugar donde ocurrió el ataque.

A unos cuantos metros de la tercera unidad, estaba Christina Marie boca abajo y su bebé, a quien logró poner a salvo.
